The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) is Russia’s national classification society. RS was suspended from IACS membership following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is no longer a recognised IACS member. Certificates issued by RS carry reduced international standing and may not be accepted by port state control authorities in many jurisdictions.
RS certificates warrant additional scrutiny. Verify acceptance with the relevant flag state and port state control authority before relying on RS-issued documentation.
How to Verify
1. Use the RS vessel search
RS provides online access to class records through its official website. Search by IMO number to verify current class status.
2. Red flags
- Certificate contact email not at an RS domain
- Classification society named anything other than “Russian Maritime Register of Shipping”
- No unique certificate reference number
