Ship Registry
Botswana is a landlocked country in southern Africa. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has confirmed that Botswana does not operate any registry of ships. Any certificate purportedly issued by a Botswana ship registry should be treated as fraudulent.
As of February 2026, 17 ships were fraudulently flying the Botswana flag (primarily tankers and general cargo ships, average tonnage 48,125 GT). The IMO Secretariat was alerted in January 2026 via S&P Global, which reported vessels broadcasting Botswana details via AIS.
