Nicaragua operates a national ship registry for vessels engaged in coastal and river navigation as well as international trade.
A fraudulent entity calling itself NIATA (“Administración de Transporte Acuático Internacional de Nicaragua”) operates the fake website niataregister.com and has issued fraudulent Nicaraguan flag documents. The Government of Nicaragua confirmed this fraud to the IMO via Circular Letter No.5135. Two vessels were specifically identified at the time of reporting: TIYARA (IMO 9231224) and SEUN (IMO 7508336).
As of February 2026, 1 ship was fraudulently flying the Nicaragua flag (tanker, average tonnage 6,522 GT), as reported to the IMO Legal Committee (LEG 113/6/1).
